Benicia is located adjacent to the Carquinez Strait, which is part of San Francisco Bay. A waterfront City of 28,000, Benicia is known for its small-town charm, history, and high quality of life. Benicia offers an abundance of leisure and recreational activities.
Founded in 1849, Benicia became the capital of California in 1851. It wasn't the capital for long, but the captal building still stands in Benicia's historic downtown district. Also in the mid 1850's the city was the home of camels, used by the army in a failed attempt to use them as pack animals. The camel barns are now a museum and can be rented for special events. The Benicia Arsenal, used from 1849 -1960 is now an industial park inhabited by a thriving craft and artist community.
Benicia State Recreation Area covers marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait.
Cyclists, runners, walkers, equestrians, and roller skaters enjoy the park’s 2 1/2 miles of road and bike paths. Picnicking, bird watching and fishing are also attractions.
Benicia is located next to Vallejo which has ferry service to downtown San Francisco for easy commuting. Across the Carquinez Strait you'll find Martinez, another historic city, which has an Amtrak train station.
It is easy to find just about anything you might desire in or near Benica!
